Highly entertaining story that made me laugh. It was also a sad tale. I highly recommend it for anyone interested WWII and history.
AS WWII slips into the mists of the past, few remember that many of the same situations that are facing Iraq and Afghanistan vets were faced by earlier American warriors, even the Greatest Generation. This moving work brings that time and their lives into sharp and evocative focus. Hickey is himself a Korean War veteran and brings insight and true feeling into his writing. Highly recommended.
This is a moving, but not maudlin, account of a good man trying to help others in a challenging western Kansas setting after World War II. Although fiction, the characters, especially Sheriff Bud Smith, seem real, thanks to author James Hickey's clear and concise writing and his attention to detail. In fact, everything in this book reads like a true story and captures the reader's interest as the events unfold. At the same time, this book paints a convincing picture of what life must have been like in western Kansas just after World War II. Highly recommended.

I was excited to find a new read from this author. I enjoyed James Hickeys earlier novel which was a snapshot of the Korean War experience. This one, a story of post WW2 rural Kansas, explores the lives of soldiers upon their return from the war. I particularly liked the character Bud Smith who is "Twainesque" with a touch of Will Rogers. He embodies the good man doing good deeds. This novel as an entertaining read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I Hope there will be another.
